Google Fiber: A Local Shares His Personal Experience

Google Fiber: A Local Shares His Personal Experience

Google Fiber has officially been in the Cove area for a few months now, but are residents satisfied with the value of the service?  We were able to get in touch with a local Owens Cross Roads resident, Michael Foss, and here’s his experience thus far:

“As a Google Fiber Internet customer for two months, I have been extremely satisfied with the service and value that I am receiving. I used to pay $70 for 75 Mbps with AT&T U-Verse Internet and now with Google Fiber, I pay $70 for 1000 Mbps.

The technician was here on time and ready to work. He was very knowledgeable and friendly, and was able to answer my many questions. The total time for installation was approximately 3.5 hours. The technician was very thorough and made sure I was completely satisfied with everything before leaving. He started installation by connecting a small white box on the old phone line cover, which became the fiber line that comes from the outside of the house, see provided picture:

The provided Google fiber Wi-Fi box can support over 10+ Wi-Fi devices.

In my household we connect using Wi-Fi. One computer uses direct connection via Cat-5e Ethernet cable. My older laptop and can only handle the 2Ghz channel, which gets me up to 30 Mbps. An iPhone can handle over 100 Mbps on Wi-Fi using the 5Ghz channel. The Google fiber technician who installed my Internet told me that they only guarantee up to 100 Mbps on wireless devices. Using an online speed test, I have witnessed up to 400 Mbps+ on the phone. A newer laptop, using the 5Ghz channel, can range between 100 Mbps – 400 Mbps, depending on how close the laptop is to the Wi-Fi box. The Windows 10 desktop that is wired directly to the box gets 980 Mbps+ speeds.

The Google Fiber box provides a user friendly experience if you want to change settings. I use the 2Ghz channel for long-range connection. I use the 5Ghz channel to obtain the fastest speed. Since I have devices that support both 2Ghz and 5Ghz channels, I have it set to use both.

Overall, I would recommend this service simply because of the value, friendly customer service, user-friendly account dashboard, and settings configuration on the Wi-Fi network box.”
