Why'd Median Narrow?

Why'd Median Narrow?

By now you’ve probably noticed the slim medians on Governors Drive during the repaving. While these are temporary, that doesn’t make them any less skinny, dangerous, or comical. ALDOT even admitted to the mistake. Until the project is complete (slated for "later this summer"), we’re offering 4 potential uses for the too-small turn lanes (many taken from comments from Cove residents)

  1. Bike Lane - despite the crazy traffic patterns and behaviors that existed before Daylight Cecil Ashburn Time began, one could occasionally see biciclysts going up and down Governors Drive. Could a center bike lane be a solution? (No, it can't, don't do this)
  2. Smart Car turn lanes - the Smart Car is only 66" wide. That's over a foot narrower than a standard SUV. You may see residents attempting to pull into/out of their driveways while utilizing these medians, afraid of getting sideswiped by the traffic, but perhaps a Smart Car is the right vehicle selection for this particular conundrum?
  3. HOV lane for elves - Santa hauls a lot of gifts, but it's not done without the help of elves. In order to expedite their commute, perhaps this could serve as an HOV lane for elves on their way to and from the North Pole.
  4. Mario Kart - turtle shells, banana peels, and mushrooms would do little to improve the daily commute, but the typical 150cc go-kart could comfortably fit in the middle lanes while racing Rainbow Road.

Upon completion of the Governors Drive repaving, all commuters to and from the Cove will enjoy better ride and safer driving conditions, especially during wet conditions. Until then, stay safe and be careful. Put your phones down, don't tailgate, and obey posted speed limits, especially in work zones!
